Pets age more rapidly than humans , so as they enter their senior years they need more frequent check ups. These visits with Dr. Wagner are a deeper look at your pet’s health to ensure early detection of concerns. These visits often include bloodwork and urinalysis. Bloodwork sounds scary and stressful but with advances in technology and patient care it is quick and painless.
Let’s take a closer look at a senior wellness screen.

Blood Chemistry
This part of the senior screen looks at all major organ functions. Most importantly the liver function, kidney function and overall electrolyte balance. Sometimes our owners notice their pet drinking more water, asking to go out more frequently, lethargy, overall restlessness, vomiting, diarrhea and even weight loss. The blood chemistry can detect early changes to these organs and provide the necessary information to start early treatment.
Complete Blood Count
This part of the senior screen looks at red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets. This information is important to screen for early infections, clotting disorders, anemia, and even some forms of systemic neoplasia.
Thyroid
Thyroid testing allows us to evaluate the function of the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland produces hormones that are responsible for the regulation of your pet’s metabolism. It can be too high or too low and this can cause unexplained weight loss and weight gain. Thyroid disease can have a big impact on your pet’s health like hair loss, skin infections, lethargy and more.
Urinalysis
Taking a closer look at your pet’s urine can give us a lot of information about the health of the kidneys. This allows for early detection of kidney disease or loss of function.  It also allows us to screen for any indication of early diabetes and even some forms of neoplasia. Testing your pet’s urine also screens for underlying bladder infections that otherwise may go undetected.

Your pet’s health is like a puzzle with many pieces. Senior wellness screens and annual visits with Dr. Wagner are an important piece of the puzzle to keep your pet happy and healthy.
